Complete College Football Rankings for Last Week

Here are the results calculated according the method I described here (more or less. I use the average of 1.0 for winning and the scoring ratio as the "game result" value). These numbers are for last week (all games prior to Dec 1st or so). I'm running the updated rankings with the most recent games. It takes a couple of hours.

Data comes from Wolfe.

On Ranking Systems

It's that time of year again: No, not for spreading tidings of comfort and joy, but rather time to spread complaints about team ranking systems and the BCS.

So I figured I'd create my own ranking system.

Implicit in the idea of the ranking system is that there is a total ordering of the teams. So we should be able to assign each team a real value by which they can be sorted.

While in many sports, a team's record should suffice, in college football in particular teams play very few games. There are about 730 college football teams and they each play between 12 and 14 games a season. Frankly, the idea that we can accurately describe all of these teams and their relative abilities with a single number is farcical. But it's a very popular farce and I want to play, too. And I, of course, want my farce to be both my own and, in some sense, better than everybody else's.* And for me, better means "saner."

*And that's why it's so popular.

Here's a rough description. I wrote a Python program that implements all of this.

So, since this is a ranking problem, I decided to start off by assigning every team a "strength" score, s. Teams with higher strengths tend to beat teams with lower strengths. The team rankings are simply the teams sorted by strength. Now, we just need some sort of model that relates two team's strengths to something observable, like winning. A function that estimates the chance of winning is a good choice. It should take the team A's strength and team B's strength as arguments and return one team's (let's say team A's) chances of winning. As team A's strength increases (holding team B's constant), the function should increase and asymptotically approach 1.0. As team A's strength decreases, the function should asymptotically approach 0.0. For two teams with equal strengths, the function should give a win probability of 0.5.

Meet the logistic function. If we pass it team A's score minus team B's score, it fits our criteria.

Now we have our model: we assign each team a strength and predict the outcome of a game as one team's likelihood of winning by taking the difference of the teams' strength scores and passing these to the logistic function. We can try and come up with these strengths ourselves, or we can automatically tune the model to fit our observations -- the results of each game.

To do that, we know we want to minimize the error between the model's prediction and the game result. Let's assign each game a 1.0 if Team A wins and a 0 if Team B wins. If we allow for ties, we'll assign them a 0.5. We can then take our team strengths and our model and compare our model results from each game to observed results. We can then take the difference of our model result and the game result value and square this to get rid of the sign (it doesn't matter). This is the method of least squares.

We sum all of the squared differences -- the model's errors -- from each game. To make our model as accurate as possible, we want to minimize this sum. So we assume a set of strengths, say 1.0 for each team, and use a minimization tool to find the set of team strength scores that minimizes the error between the model and the observed games. Since we're solving for all of the teams' strengths simultaneously while using all of the games played by all of the teams that season, we automatically account for strength of schedule. There are a lot of minimization (optimization) techniques. I used SciPy's implementation of BFGS.

Once we have the solution vector of team strengths, we can sort by strength and that's our ranking.

Anyway, that's the basic idea. I'll hopefully talk more about it later. Maybe about how you can include things like score in the results and maybe improve on this write up.

List of Aerospace Texts

Here's a list of text books that roughly fit an aerospace engineering undergraduate degree. I left off the soft courses. I'd appreciate feedback and suggestions, please. I'm particularly lacking on the space side, I think.

Number on left indicates roughly which semester (2 to 3 semesters a year) you might encounter the material. So higher numbers correspond to (in theory) more difficult material. Pure graduate level material is listed as G.

Non-core/Pre-reqs:

Tools and Languages

These are texts on tools either common in the industry or accessible and becoming more common. They'll primarily be on programming languages and software.

Python

A Primer on Scientific Programming with Python, Langtangen

Numerical Methods in Engineering with Python, Kiusalaas

Python Scripting for Computational Science, Langtangen

Matlab/Octave

Restrictive licensing warning: Matlab has a both expensive and restrictive license, unlike the other languages in this list. Sadly, it's also quite common in the aerospace industry. Octave is an free/open source language that's similar enough to Matlab that many Matlab scripts will run under Octave and vise-versa.

Gnu Octave Version 3.0.1 Manual: A High-Level Interactive Language For Numerical Computations, Eaton, Bateman and Hauberg

Matlab for Engineers, Moore

Fortran

Fortran 95/2003 Explained, Metcalf, Reid and Cohen

C and C++

GNU Scientific Library Reference Manual, Gough -- Free/open source and online.

Numerical Recipes, Press et al -- C++ version of the Numerical Recipes books. Caveat Lector: As noted here, "Numerical Recipes is a good book for learning about numerical methods. As a subroutine library, it's a useful trap." The licensing of the software discussed and included is very restrictive.

Perl

Programming Perl, Wall -- Perl sees heavy use in the spacecraft engineering industry

Edit History:

Moved "Tools and Languages" to it's own section. Added a lot of books.

Added Electrical, Electronic and Dynamical Systems as a category for Electrical Engineering type texts as well as Automatic Control and Estimation. Removed "Electrical Engineering"

A Better Election System

Consider the following questions:

    1) Should the candidate with the most support win an election?

    2) Is it possible to support more than one candidate?

It's really hard to argue with 1 and 2 is definitely true. So, instead of allowing a voter to vote for just one candidate, he/she should be allowed to cast a vote for every candidate they support. Assuming we can count the votes with any sort of accuracy, then the winner should be the candidate who get's the most votes.

Another way of looking at this is to frame an election as picking the candidate that the most voters find acceptible. In the current system, many voters don't even vote for who they think to be best candidate, for fear that their vote will be wasted. And we've created a who extraneous system, the parties and their primaries, to avoid having candidates with similar positions split the vote.

This new system, which we'll call "multicandidate selection," takes away the false choice that one must pick between multiple acceptable candidates. It seems ridiculous that a popular set of principles or platform suffer because multiple candidates share it.

Multicandidate selection more informative as well, all of the voter's preferenced candidates receive credit and positive feedback.

If we treat an election as a constraint satisfaction problem, then with multicandidate selection we're picking the candidate that best satisfies the constraints. With the current system, however, it's not clear to me what we're picking.

Questions remain, of course. What to do in the case of a tie? Well, minimally, we could have a run off where current vote for only one candidate rules apply. We might also include a ranking system in the original ballot, but to preserve the "selects the candidate acceptible to the most voters" property, the ranking system could only come into play due to a tie.

Still, I can't see how multicandidate selection is in any way inferior to the current system. Do we really believe that, in any given election, one only candidate is capable of the job?

Quantifying Freedom

"Everybody wants to be be... closer to free" --BoDeans "Closer to Free"

We often speak of freedom and liberty as if they are quantities. But what does it mean to be "more free?"

Off hand, quantifying freedom is going to be a rather difficult task, but it should be possible to develop bounds, maybe an estimator and perhaps a clear set of units that freedom should be measured in.

In some sense, freedom is a physical thing. One useful, (quasi)physical definition for freedom is "the number of states an individual can safely be in." This leads me to intuit that the freedom of society should resemble temperature, a macrostate that combines the freedom of the individual members. Of course, some states are more desirable or more beneficial than others, so there is probably some sort of weighting between the states. Also, it's not clear to me how to discretize or partition (since it's got a thermodynamical flavor) the state space. Or even what the space should look like. (Should it consist of position and velocity? Individual wealth and health? Energy and power available to the individual? The set of strings describing the individuals actions? Etc, etc.)

Since freedom clearly has at least some physical meaning, we should be able to at least come up with a decent definition for "physical freedom." "Physical liberty" is preferable, I think, since freedom already has so many uses in discussing physical systems.
